Annabelle Gurwitch
Biography
Actress and writer Annabelle Gurwitch takes social issues and gives them her own brand of humor and perspective. Time Magazine cited her as the “person to know” for her work on The Fired book and documentary film. She is currently a contributing writer and commentator at NPR and columnist for The Nation Magazine where her targets are everything from politics to pop culture and now “Going Green”. Next up, Annabelle will host the new series “WA$TED”, which is set to launch Discovery Channel’s new network, Planet Green in June 2008.
Annabelle’s book: Fired! Tales of the Canned, Canceled, Downsized and Dismissed, published by Simon and Schuster, deemed a “merry compendium of failure” by The Washington Post, was #1 on The New York Post Hot List. Annabelle and her project have been featured in media as varied as The Today Show, Fox and Friends, CNN, MSNBC, Talk of The Nation on NPR, Psychology Today, The New York Times, Business Week, Glamour, and People, and spawned contests all over the country, as well as inspiring her documentary film also titled Fired!, The film, called “Hilarious” by The Nation Magazine and “entertaining and slyly subversive” by Oprah Magazine is currently in rotation on the Showtime and Sundance Channels and is available for sale and at Netflix. Fired carries the message of turning your crappy experiences in the workplace into opportunities for growth through humor, perspective and a little imagination.
Her non-scripted TV series include: her six year stint on the cult favorite “Dinner and a Movie” for T.B.S., hosting shows on The Style Channel, on Sci- Fi, VHI, ABC, The Game Show Network and HBO. Recent guest spots include: “State of Mind”, “The Minor Accomplishments of Jackie Woodman” and “Boston Legal”. Other films include: “Shaggy Dog” and “Melvin Goes to Dinner”. Annabelle’s work in off-Broadway in the title role of Murray Mednick’s Joe and Betty garnered her place in The New York Times Top Ten Performances in Theatre of the Year 2002.
Her essays has appeared in publications including Parade, The Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles Magazine, Child, Glamour and her environmental pieces have aired on NPR and in webisodes for The Daily Green web site.
Annabelle attended The Experimental Theatre Wing of NYU and lives in Los Angeles with her husband Emmy Award winning writer Jeff Kahn and their 10 year old son. Annabelle and her husband Jeff are currently at work on a comic memoir You Say Tomato, I Say Shut Up.
